Buying Pokémon singles: what to check
Buying a single card gives you control over what joins your collection. Before purchasing, make sure you can identify the exact card and assess the specific item being offered.
Identify the edition
Check the expansion, printed card number, language and rarity. An illustration rare, a special illustration rare and a regular ex card can share a Pokémon name while having different artwork and prices.
Ask for photographs of the actual card
Database images show a design. Seller photographs should show the front, back, corners and edges of the item for sale. Look for whitening, dents, scratches, bends and surface marks.
Separate raw cards from graded cards
A raw single has no third-party grade. A graded card should have a clear grading company, grade and certification number that you can verify with the grading company.
Read the full cost and terms
Compare the card price along with shipping, taxes and any import charges. Review the seller’s return terms and payment protections before placing an order.
Use prices as a reference
Compare recent listings for the same card, condition and language. Market prices fluctuate and are not a promise of future value.
